Kalinga Saved
The recent cyclone that hit the Orissan coast, the worst in this century, devastated a large tract of the ancient Kalinga kingdom killing more than 9000 people and over 40,000 cattle. Even after fifteen days of the cyclone the government is struggling to clear the human corpses not to speak of cattle. The velocity of the cyclone was staggering. It has left behind unimaginable human suffering.
As you are aware the ancient Kalinga particularly the coastal regions has a very large number temples most of them ranging from 7th cent to 12th Cent. They are architectural masterpieces carrying exquisite sculptures representing various deities, portaits, dancers, animals and floral designs.
The group of temples and their sculptures are the standing witness to the Kalinga religious ethos and art. Bhuvanesvar, Puri Jagannath and Konarak are some of the well known sites with such temples. They are the centres of Hindu worship, prayers and pilgrimages.
The report says that the worst recent cyclone has not luckily affected these marvelous temples. It is a great relief to note that they have survived this cyclone. The prayers of the pious Hindus over the centuries have strengthened their foundations and stability. Let us join the people of India and the world and pray that human suffering here will soon be eliminated and the temples will continue to survive for thousands of years inspite of nature's fury.
The Archaeology dept of Orissa has issued a press statement that all temples in Orissa are safe and stand intact. However one can not remain complacent. We have to think of drawing a contingency plan on modern scientific lines to strengthen further the fabric and sculptures of these temples. Those of us who have access to modern technology and means should send our views and assistance to the Govt of Orissa and Archaeological Survey of India to preserve them.
Also we need simple lucid guide books and other materials about their historicity and religious importance. Please think how you can generate some interest in this area.
Do you know that Bhuvanesvar was known as Ekamra kshetra? Do you know that Rajarani temple was built on the plan of Sri Cakra? Do you know that the Lingaraj temple of Bhuvanesvar was built almost at the same time as the Great temple of Tanjore? Do you know that Puri Jagannath was the presiding deity of entire kalinga?
The Kings of Kalinga ruled their country as the Servants (Dasas)of Lord
Jagannath?
Do you know that Jayadeva's Ashtapadi alone was to be danced in the
temple of Puri Jagannath?
